Seldom seen, this orchid hides beneath the deep shade of oaks and juniper trees that form strips of forest along limestone bluffs and hillsides. The only part of the Texas Purple Spike that appears above ground is the slender purple flower spike that emerges in summer. Along this stem, each flower has bright yellow crests that run the length of the white lip, a striking contrast to the rest of the shiny maroon flower. Don't be fooled by this elegant orchid! The Texas Purple Spike belongs to a small gang of leafless orchids called "cheaters." Without leaves, cheaters can't use sunlight to make food like most other plants. Scientists call these orchids "mycoheterotrophs." They survive underground, often for years, by digesting soil fungi. The Texas Purple Spike steals valuable nutrients and carbon not just from the fungi, but indirectly from nearby trees that support these fungi on their roots.

Model difficulty rating: 4/5 (moderately difficult)

The goal of the North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC), established by the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Botanic Garden, is to assure the survival of native orchids in the U.S. and Canada. When the blooms are spent and seeds are mature, simply mow down the plants - and don't be surprised if you get another group of plants in the Fall! This flower is commonly referred to as Indian Blanket. There are several Native American tales concerning the origins of the flower told in Legends & Lore of Texas Wildflowers, by Elizabeth Silverthorne. Such legends and lore hint at the value given to natural beauty by people that lived with the earth. It has several other common names such as fire wheel, sundance, and blanket flower. Native Americans also used the dried flowers for medicinal teas treating a wide variety of ailments. Indian blanket (Gaillardia pulchella) is an annual native throughout the central U.S. and is one of the easiest wildflowers to grow. It is rarely eaten by deer and prefers a hot dry climate in full sun. Indian blanket grows in mounds ranging from 12 to 24 in. and with a spread of about 12 in. This native will bloom with a daisy like flower from April to frost and will sport different color variations depending on the environment and soils. The colors can range from coral with yellow scallops, peach with yellow scallops, coral with peach scallops, and red with white scallops. It can still be sown Aug/Sept through February/March to provide for your own spring blanket. Gaillardia is the official flower of the state of Oklahoma.

This size is a PKT for 10 sq ft

More information: https://seedsource.com/indian-blanket/

Monarda citriodora

Also known as "Horsemint," this native annual grows from Missouri to Kansas to Mexico. The scientific name of Monarda Citriodora, was given to this wildflower in honor of Nicholas Monarda a Spanish Physician in the 1500’s who discovered several medicinal properties of plants found in the America’s. The name Citriodora refers to the citrus like scent that the plant has when the leaves are crushed. This scent makes it deer resistant and if you rub the leaves on your skin it makes a fair insect repellant also. It contains the oil citronellol that is used commercially in some insect repellants and lotions. Native Americans, such as the Hopis, Pueblo and Tewa, used the leaves in flavoring rabbit and stews and brewed the leaves for a tea to soothe sore throats and cold symptoms.

Lemon Mint does belong to the mint family which can be easily identified by their square stems. Most pollinators visit this aromatic wildflower at one time or another but it seems to be especially popular with bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. This native would be a must have for anyone interested in attracting pollinators to their landscape.

Lemon Mint is a winter annual and reseeds readily if allowed to go to seed before mowing. This wildflower really is easy to get to come up from seed, and can be planted in the fall or in very early spring. The seeds are economical and 3 lbs will give you an acre of beautiful stalks of cylindrical purple blooms. It likes the heat and tolerates all soil types with growth reaching one to two feet. Its natural range is the southern half of the U.S but would grow in many Northern regions if planted. Just as wildlife has suffered from increased fragmentation of land through urbanization, so have bees, beetles, & butterflies. Not long ago, beekeepers would ask farmers to set beehives near croplands in exchange for some honey. Now farmers are paying beekeepers to bring in hives for their crops. Hives are trucked all over the nation. A third of U.S. food supply depends on pollinators. Why the decline in pollinators? Could it be the increased use of pesticides... or light pollution to the night sky? Whatever the reasons, many organizations are offering helpful information and incentives for people to plant pollinator habitats. Pollinators like plants that produce pollen, nectar, habitat, shelter and safety from predators. Pollinators need nectar throughout most of the year, not just in spring. It spreads from rhizomes and seeds, and in all its glory reaches 4 to 6 feet tall. Its rich, deep green circular colonies are quite distinct and beautiful, even when they're not in flower. Three inch yellow flower heads bloom up and down the stalks of these plants all at once. Plant this sunflower along a fence or the side of a building, as a hedge. If you prune them back to about 18 inches or 2 feet in late May, it will encourage a thicker clump. They will make a mound of green foliage all summer, and then shoot up late in the season producing masses of big yellow blooms. Monarch butterflies will flock to this one!
